Mission Statement

We believe that the Health and Physical Education programs are important to the physical, social, mental emotional and spiritual development of the individual. These programs provide for the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary to promote positive lifestyle behaviors.We believe that people have the basic need to learn throughout life, and that there is a strong correlation between self-esteem and learning efficiency, which is related to the individual reaching their full potential.We believe that complete learning is a shared responsibility by the parents, students, schools and the community.We believe these programs help prepare the individual to become responsible in achieving optimal health and well-being so they are prepared to be effective contributors in society.

DEPARTMENT GOALS:
       Goal 1:  Monitor and adjust curriculum, instruction, and assessments to make systematic changes to improve student learning.
       Goal 2:  Define the criteria that represent the attainment of content knowledge and skills.
       Goal 3:  Analyze data on student performance from a range of sources.
       Goal 4:  Train teacher in the evaluation, interpretation and use of data.
       Goal 5:  Determine criteria necessary to verify improvement in student learning.

Courses

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

Course Description:  Health Education is an integral part of a student’s success in life. It provides opportunity for students to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for lifelong learning and gaining a balance of health and wellness. 

ADVANCED HEALTH – Adult Roles and Responsibilities

Course DescriptionThis course prepares students to understand the nature, function, and significance of human relationships involving individuals and families. Topics include: family living, parenting, household and money management, decision-making skills, communication skills, self-awareness, crisis management, and the individual’s roles and responsibilities within the family and community. Emphasis will be placed upon the uniqueness, needs, and interests of individuals and families.

COED SPORTS

Course DescriptionCoed Sports offers students instruction in lifetime activities and fulfills a P.E. requirement for high school graduation. Individual, dual, and team sport activities are included, with the emphasis on activities offering lifelong participation opportunities. Fitness activities may include basketball, volleyball, football, soccer, racquet sports, and other lifetime sports.

DYNAMIC FITNESS

Course DescriptionThis course has been designed to develop positive health and fitness practices for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The purpose of this exercise class is to enhance the health related components of fitness which include cardio respiratory endurance, muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition with emphasis on cardio respiratory activities such as walking, jogging, jump roping, and high and low impact aerobics. Reasonable accommodations will be provided to qualified persons with disabilities upon request.

SOCIAL DANCE

Objectives:
Students will learn and demonstrate social etiquette in dance.
Students will recognize and demonstrate rhythm proficiency in different areas of social dance.
Students will learn basic techniques that will enhance their dance knowledge.
Students will develop endurance through gradual increase in energy required in dance activities.
Students will learn to enjoy social dance as a leisure time activity and lifelong physical activity.

THEATER AND SOCIAL DANCE

Course DescriptionThis course is designed to teach students the works of theater art through the study and appreciation of theater as an art form. This course is also designed to build student’s dance knowledge and skills in technique, improvisation, choreography, expression, history, culture, and performance. Both courses are intended to construct student’s knowledge of the arts through theater and dance.
